The Meager Scope of Obama's Ambitions →
David Brooks, after a diversion into some confusion over the last few weeks, has come back today with an insightful piece, that analyzes how Obama, after running an ‘08 campaign with ambitions of great change, is pursuing an agenda now that aims to do way too little.

Delivering Value to Taxpayers
Businesses deliver value to customers through the very clear feedback loop of payment: if the business provides values, customers pay; if it doesn’t, they don’t.  Such a feedback loop does not exist with  government: customers (or “taxpayers”) are compelled to pay. As a result, government is able to be very wasteful and often fail to deliver high value per dollar to...

Business Insider: The Future Of Media  →
A great report on BI on the future of media and the Internet.  Among many insights, I was surprised to see how much share of total ad spend the Internet now consumes (35%) and how much of that is Google’s (over half)

GOP: Romney might not be the pick . . .
So it appears that the GOP will be choosing Mitt Romney as its candidate. His performance in the process as well as harassment allegations and debate blunders have positioned him as the likely candidate.  However, the GOP nomination process might not be vetting a huge liability of his business background that other candidates are not burdened by. Today the NYT ran a piece detailing the...

– More truth coming from David Brooks today.  This is advice to Obama. Sadly, it’s highly unlikely that it will happen.

But it seems more accurate that we all are guilty of arrogance and a sense of entitlement. We are all to blame. So — what do those Wall Street protesters really want? What are they asking for? Obviously, I can’t speak for the participants in a growing movement, just as I cannot agree with all the grievances and demands as described in the media. But I can hazard a guess about what we all want in...

How To Distribute Prosperity
The OWS demonstrations I think have done a good job in raising the problem of the distribution of wealth in the US. Many thinkers have provided lots of analysis of the problem, and the causes, I think, are rather clear: globalization and technology.  This weekend in the NYT fomer Wall St. exec Steve Rattner had a good, candid piece on the effects of globalization. Thomas Friedman has been writing...

Good Collection of Inequality Statistics →
I don’t necessarily agree with all of the conclusions here, but this is a good set of data about the growing inequality in the US.  Resolving it presents a conflict of capitalism and democracy. Free marketers see the distribution of wealth in the country as a function of the capitalist system and thus should not be tampered with. However in a democracy outcomes are often a function of what...

Another Year
Last night Kita and I watched Another Year, a 2010 British film. Its plot: really nothing in particular. Kita and I read the Netflix sleeve and I couldn’t imagine a more nondescript summary.  It was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It was incredibly subtle: it was as if it were painted in watercolors tea water. But it was so true to life, so well acted and so powerful....

The Internet Pop-Culture Monster
My partner Mike has always been a walking IMDB. I’ve never known anyone who comes close in his knowledge of pop culture, particularly movies. But he really takes it step further on the Internet. There’s not a gadget he doesn’t have. He often says there’s not an app he won’t register for or download. All of this struck me today when he walked into the office with a...

We went to see Cats yesterday at the Boulder Dinner Theater. I was concerned going in: how good was the production of a high-degree-of-difficulty show going to be for at a tiny little local theater?  Well Bubble, you’ve done it again. I was shocked by the talent—dancing and singing—of the actors. Mr. Mistophocles, the lead dancing role, was even a home-grown talent who learned...
